ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Bob O'Neill and staff at the Play Information technology Again Sports used sporting goods store in St. John'due south have served a lot of customers over the last 28 years.

"Originally, they came in as small kids themselves years ago with their own parents, and now they're coming in with their own kids," reflected O'Neill, i of the store's owners. "Nosotros've reached different generations of customers."

But with O'Neill representing the youngest member of the ownership team at the historic period of 64, there was a growing sense amidst them that a time for modify was imminent. Thus, O'Neill and his colleagues are retiring from the business and looking for a new possessor to take information technology over.

"I've got three partners, and we're all very strong advocates of the fact that we experience that the franchise, it would be quite surprising if we didn't achieve an agreement with somebody for the purchase of it, considering there's so many people who count on information technology," he told The Telegram Wednesday.

"For the trade-ins, for the skate sharpening, for everything else."

"I said to somebody recently, I'd beloved to know the dollar value of the product that nosotros've recycled through the years."

Saving waste

There was no other business like information technology when O'Neill and his partners opened Play It Once more Sports in 1992. The business is part of a franchise with locations throughout the U.s. and Canada, though the St. John's shop is the but one in Atlantic Canada. There were no other stores in the city specializing in used sports equipment, and that remains the case today. Play It Again Sports offers trade-in discounts to customers who have old equipment that someone else might find useful.

"I said to somebody recently, I'd love to know the dollar value of the production that nosotros've recycled through the years," said O'Neill, who reckons the business keeps a lot of gear out of landfills.

A big office of what has helped the business organisation become a success has been the expensive nature of sports equipment. Used gear at Play It Again Sports is generally sold at half the cost of new equipment. The trade-in option tin can come in handy for parents needing to become new skates or soccer cleats every bit their children abound, according to O'Neill. He believes this has helped a lot of families afford to get their kids involved in sports when information technology otherwise would not have been financially feasible to practise then.

New, used gear

While it does accept a unique position in the St. John'south market place selling used sports equipment, O'Neill said 80 per cent of the business is dedicated to new gear. While hockey is a big part of what brings customers to Play Information technology Again Sports, the growing popularity of golf has increased that sport'due south presence in the store. Soccer and figure skating are ii other strong markets for the business concern. For the latter sport, Play It Once again Sports has consistently been the top retailer in Eastern Canada, according to O'Neill.

The shop moved into its current location at 390 Topsail Rd. most the Village Mall in 2016. The business concern and franchise are currently on the market for $100,000 as a turnkey operation, ready for use the moment a new purchaser buys information technology. The current inventory would require a split up transaction, O'Neill said.

Knowing Play Information technology Again Sports has connected with multiple generations over the years makes moving on from the business hard, O'Neill admitted.

"It's always 1 of the hardest parts — you lot take the relationships that are established with your customers, who supported us and then well over the years," he said.
